"Most Innovative New Program" Award

Congratulations! The Canadian Section has been selected to receive recognition for implementing the 2004 Most Innovative New Program for the "Run for the Future" initiative. This new award category was established by the SPE Membership as a means to honor one section for having developed a unique, successful program which in this case resulted in increased member participation and more funding for PE scholarships during the past reporting year.

    Chairman's Message (September, 2004)

I would like to welcome you back from the summer vacation season. The SPE Canadian Section will be celebrating its 15th anniversary in October 2004. As part of the celebration we will be bringing you a special SPE Luncheon on October 8th 2004, featuring a world-renowned Petroleum Engineer, Dr. William Cobb who will be presenting a global perspective on waterflooding.

During 2004 -2005 the SPE Canadian Section will be bringing a very informative technical program to its members. We are finalizing our monthly luncheon meetings and details will be posted on this web site soon. As part of this program, there will be three SPE Distinguished Lecturer luncheons scheduled for February, April and May of 2005. There will be two Applied Technology workshops, one on Coal Bed Methane in November 2004, and the other on Oil and Gas Reserves Estimation. The Canadian Section will be co-hosting the International Thermal Operations and Heavy Oil Symposium (ITOHOS) in 2005.

The Section will be working hard to raise money for the Scholarship programs. Our efforts in this worthwhile endeavor have been recognized by SPE. "The Canadian Section has been selected to receive recognition for implementing the 2004 Most Innovative New Program for the "Run for the Future" initiative. This new award category was established by the SPE Membership as a means to honor one section for having developed a unique, successful program, which in this case resulted in increased member participation and more funding for SPE scholarships during the past reporting year."

We will also be reviewing and implementing some of the ideas and action items we generated at last year's Officers Workshop in Kananaskis. This is designed to make sure the Canadian Section is delivering appropriate service to its members, based on changing demographics and technical knowledge requirements.

The Canadian Section of SPE is a Registered Charitable Organization. Through our efforts we raise money to disseminate technical knowledge to our members and provide scholarships at seven post-secondary schools in Western Canada. We depend on the generosity of our corporate and event sponsors, and mostly the participants in our events to do this. We want to thank all of our generous sponsors for their contributions. We also want to remind other potential sponsors that we provide tax receipts for corporate and personal donations.

Looking forward to an exciting and rewarding 15th year for our Canadian Section.

    Yours Very Truly,
    Phillip Chan
    SPE Canadian Section Chairperson 2004-2005
